Taha Hussein Association – Um El Fahm, Israel

Project Title:  General Support

The Taha Hussein Association for the Blind was established in 1989.  Since then, it has provided services for the blind and vision impaired persons in and around Um El-Fahm (Israel).

The Association endeavors to ameliorate the lives of vision impaired persons by focusing on their general welfare, developing new services and applying them in the region, and by increasing awareness in the community concerning vision impairment.

Blind (and vision impaired) children are placed into classes that consider their disability and help to integrate them into the daily routine of non-disabled children.  Supplementary class hours and Braille language instruction are part and parcel of the overall program offered by the Association.

Special programs are an integral part of the Association.  Summer camps, excursions inside and outside of Israel, and exchanging gifts during festivals are various methods used by the Association to fuel a sense of belonging and empowerment in the community.

Job creation and placement are also part of the program.  The Association matches blind (and vision impaired) people with adequate work that suits their needs and skills.

Most of the staff at the Association volunteer their time.
